Existential Counselling Bristol Ross on Wye
How to find life meaning and purpose when your time is running out?

What is the Existential Approach and how can it help you?

Often when I am asked what I do for a living and I respond 'I am an Existential Counsellor' I am often met with confusion about what one of those things are! So here I am going to describe to you what it is and what it looks like.

We are all born void of purpose and meaning. This provides life questions where the answers may have been found within religion. In the decline of religious belief, I believe the counselling room has become the arena for such thought and discussion.

My approach in the counselling room is to step into your world, to try to understand your life and experiences to see you and how these things may lay the pathway to helping find meaning in your life on life's terms.

Often life teaches us the greatest skills when we are confronted with crisis. A long held strategy with existentialism is when one can find meaning in suffering, suffering seizes to be suffering and often meaning and purpose in life can be found.

The existential approach is also a pull on the delights that have already been written. It is an exploration into how the words of some of life's great philosophers can offer inspiration and thought about how to carve out a blueprint for your life.

A final piece here is I don't shy away from stepping into the room with you. I believe vulnerability is a place human beings meet. Neither am I quiet, I climb into the therapeutic space with you offering a metaphorical hand to guide you onto the stepping stones you uncover along our journey together.

'Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate. Carl Jung'

The existential approach brings elements of philosophy and psychology into therapy to help you understand your place in your world.

It focuses on the anxieties and uncertainties that are a fundamental part of life and existence, such as death, the fear of the unknown and the meaning of life.

At its core is the idea that we all have the capabilities and personal responsibility for making decisions and creating our own success.
